April 1, 2010 is Census Day in the United States, the day when every person in the nation is counted. Why is Census Day important? The count determines how over $400 billion will be distributed to states, counties, municipalities and schools.

The 2010 Census questionnaire is the shortest in recent history with just 10 questions. Forms, which will be mailed to each residence in March, take about 10 minutes to complete. It is important that you report each adult and child in your household and return the form according to the instructions.

While most residents respond in a timely manner to the Census, others might be reluctant to do so. Please note that Title 13 of the U.S. Code requires information collected by the U.S. Census Bureau be used only for statistical purposes. By law, your information must be kept confidential. If you do not return a form, a Census worker will visit your residence to take the count in person.

Steger School District 194 looks forward to your response to the Census. You will help make sure we receive our fair share of federal funding for education and nutrition programs that are so important to our students. If you are not counted, the money allocated for you and members of your household will go back to the government and be reallocated to other areas of the state or country based on their Census counts. Please take the time to ensure your state, county, city and schools receive their portion of the funds by helping provide an accurate Census count.
